A Halloween Slumber Party

Well over a month ago, I promised Trayden and Ansleigh that when the weather cooled off a bit and we got closer to Halloween, they could come over to spend the night in our travel trailer, which is parked out in the backyard.  For some reason, this sounded like a grand adventure to them and they've been looking forward to it ever since.....

This past weekend, it was time to make good on that promise!

I hit Dollar Tree and picked up some fun, cheap decorations.  A little bit of tape, a few AAA batteries, and we were good to go!  Creepy spider cutouts climbed all over the walls, even in the sleeping berth above the bed.  I found little flashlights with interchangeable lenses to create spooky effects on the ceiling.  A tumbler full of eyeball and brains ring pops waited on the table.  I loved the vintage feel of some of the honeycomb tissues decorations.

Bonnie dropped them off around 5:00 and Ed arrived home from work very shortly thereafter.  He built a fire in the pit and we started carting everything we needed for hotdogs out to the trailer for some fine dining.  The day had been very warm, but we had the fan running and all the windows cranked open, so it was just tolerable. Everybody was starving and we put away an entire package of Ball Park wienies and seasoned fries between the four of us!

After cleaning up, Ed set up our little flat screen tv and DVD player and, before you know it, it was dark and time for a movie.  We plugged in the pumpkin lights, turned off the rest of the interior lights and watched Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

Reclining against piles of pillows, we ate popcorn and drank Capri Sun juice pouches.  By 9:00 pm, everyone was waning and Ansleigh announced that it was definitely time to drag out the sleeping bags and go to sleep!  Trayden resisted and we put in "The Polar Express", but we didn't even make it to the North Pole before dozing off......

Since the kiddos wanted to sleep near each other, we threw their sleeping bags up on the big bed and I slept on the fold-out sofa.  They slept like rocks, by golly, neither one waking until after 8:00 am the next morning.

Of course, by the next morning, my back felt like I had slept on a bed of rocks, but it was so worth it.  We came inside the house for breakfast at EdHop - pancakes, bacon, eggs and orange juice.   When Bonnie arrived to pick them up at lunch time, they each left with their own pumpkin and carving kit to make jack-o-lanterns here in a few days.

All in all, it was a really fun slumber party, right in our own backyard!  Very simple, not a lot of fuss....just making some fun memories together!  And, isn't that what it's all about???

Now, my 21-year old Sam texted me today to ask when we are getting together to carve pumpkins.....so, looks like we'll be doing a little more Halloween entertaining this next weekend.  But, I'm looking forward to it, just as I do every year!

Hugs....

TRICK or TREAT!!!

What a wonderful evening with Family tonight!

Put together an impromptu dinner of simple "hamburger stew" late this afternoon.  Opted for store bought jalapeno cheese bread, corn muffins and thumbprint cookies to keep the stress levels down since this was kinda "last minute".  Grabbed a few extra pumpkins while I was at the store. Then Bonnie, Ben & Bethany, Sam, Mom and Daddy gathered at our house......and we had a terrific time!

Pumpkin carving commences on the back porch

We had wonderful, mild weather for being out of doors
In comparison to last year, it seemed we had quite a few kids come to the door for treats.  We just about ran out of candy!!!  I had to bring out my secret stash of snack-size Heath bars for the last few kids.  (I guess that's probably a good thing....)

This is how our porch looked at the end of an evening of carving........

Kinda spooky, huh?

Hope you've had a fun time with your loved ones this evening!

A big BOO to you!!!

Ghosts of Autumns Past....

My love of "Everything Autumn" came naturally.  I do believe it was fostered by my parents when I was a child.  I have some very special memories that point the way to the beginning of my love affair with Fall.....

In particular, I can remember going for long drives out in the country when I was little.  On Sunday afternoons, my mom and dad would load us up in the car to head out southwest of town, into a little ridge rising out of the earth that is known as Steamboat Mountains.  (Now, I fully acknowledge that these are not really "mountains", more like little foothills.  But, they are a break from the flat lands where Abilene sits perched.)  And, so we would head out for Daddy to "blow the soot" out of the car (translation, give the motor a good run for it's money).

In the Fall, when the leaves began to change, Mom would arm herself with a small hand saw and when we would get away from town and into the heavier foliage, she would have Daddy pull over to the side of the road and she would take her saw and cut off a few small, low-hanging branches from the oak trees.  These were her favorites ~ just as the leaves were beginning to turn a rusty red.  When we got back home, she would arrange artfully them in an old metal milk can that she had gotten at a local antique store.  She painted and antiqued the milk can a dull colonial red and decoupaged an eagle across the front.  (Did I mention that some of our furniture was the mid-century-popular "Early American"?)  Now, that was really a "Martha Stewart" thing to do before Martha was even a glimmer on the horizon!

Oak leaves shimmering in the Indian Summer afternoon

(After Thanksgiving, we would head out again and my parents would cut boughs off cedar trees and lug them back into town, where Daddy would carefully wire them onto the wrought iron porch support and then weave our only strand of outdoor lights throughout the greenery for the holidays.  But, that's another story entirely....)

As for Halloween, well, it was a wonderful season at our house.  Oh, we didn't have a whole lot of decorations.  And we sure as heck didn't get to drag them out on the first day of October!  But, we did have paper decorations that Mom would take out a few days prior to October 31st.  One year, my Aunt Dorothy added substantially to our collection with some truly vintage paper decorations, and even some old-fashioned "noisemakers", that my cousins had enjoyed when they were younger.  Most everything came from the "five & dime" store, but we would tape the black and orange tissue paper garland and decorations up around the front porch, or in our front bedroom windows.  Remember these?  We used them year after year.....and I really wish I had them still!

Honeycombed paper pumpkins

A trip to the grocery store yielded a big pumpkin for carving.  Daddy would enlist our help to scoop the seeds and guts out of the pumpkin, but he usually did the carving.  Our only choices were "happy jack-o-lantern" or "scary jack-o-lantern", but he loved making them really snaggle-toothed!

Eddie's interpretation of "happy jack-o-lantern"

I distinctly remember going over to the TG&Y and getting new boxed costumes one year......

This version of the popular clown costume is from 1973.
The earlier costumes, circa mid-1960's, were simpler - only red, blue and yellow - no orange or green what-so-ever!
They came complete with the little plastic mask, which was difficult to wear for any length of time without sweating your face off!  Mom got Jill and I the cheerful clown costumes ~ and both in a size big enough to wear over our regular clothes in case it was chilly.  For some reason, getting those store-made costume really stands out in my mind.  I must have been about 7 years old, maybe 6, but I still remember the shiny, cheap fabric in yellow, red and blue.  Looking back, we must have looked like miniature Bozo's, but we were so proud!

One year, about 1970, we hosted a Halloween party in our backyard and invited friends!  Mom cut little pumpkin invitations out of orange construction paper and Daddy did the printing.  We passed them out to our friends at church and school.  Before dark on Halloween, everyone came, in costume, to the back yard, the clothesline festooned with orange and black crepe paper and hanging decorations.  We bobbed for apples and had popcorn balls.

Bobbing for apples!

We had 3-legged races; we dropped clothespins in bottles; we raced with dry pinto beans balanced on butter knives; and we even had relay races where we had to bust balloons by sitting on them.  I will never forget that party ~ as long as I live.  It didn't really cost any money; the food, decorations and games were very simple.  But, it was so much fun!  It was all over when darkness fell and everyone's parents picked them up and took them home for trick-or-treating in their neighborhood.

Gosh, the memories just pile up and press me to bring them forward ~ take them out and reflect on them.  And, obviously, many of them revolve around this time of the year.  That is probably why Autumn is just about my favorite season.

Do your memories come flooding back this time of year?  Is it the time of year when all the senses seem to kick in and contribute to a sense of nostalgia when you get a whiff of a candle burning the inside of the pumpkin, or feel the crisp chill of an Autumn evening, or hear the dry rustle of tissue paper decorations?  What brings it all back for you???

Feeling Fabulously Fall-ish....

Reflections on October....

Here we are, already past the first week of November!  But, I wanted to take a moment to pause and reflect on October before it just becomes a dim memory.....

What a busy month it was!  A lot of time was spent decorating for Autumn and Halloween.  I put a lot of effort into it this year since we live so near the grandkids and I wanted Mimi and Papa Ed's place to be really special for the season.  It might have been a lot of work, but it was a lot of FUN, too!

All that effort drew lots of attention and compliments from the neighbors and trick-or-treaters!  In addition, my blog post,  "Make Mine Spooky, Please", garnered some attention from FrontPorchIdeasandMore.Com and was featured in a special Halloween decorating section on their website.  You can check it out RIGHT HERE.   What a thrill to see my porch somewhere other than on my blog!  LOL.

Another project that seemed to require a lot of time in October was preparing for my stepdaughter's wedding in Oklahoma.  There was much to be done as far as helping Ed plan the meal that she requested for the reception....but, most of my time and energy was focused on finding that oh-so-right dress.  Remember???

I waited for my educational requirements to be evaluated by the Texas Real Estate Commission and my application to take the state licensing exam to be approved.  I was disappointed by the delay, but started an intensive review of the material I studied over the Summer.  I heard back from them just before leaving for the wedding.  I have a "green light" to take the exam!

And, finally, we put together a family evening of pumpkin-carving and chili-eating to celebrate Halloween.  It turned out to be so much fun - I'm sure a new family tradition has been born!

But, as I reflect on the month, one of the most special and rewarding moments had to be making cookies with my 4-year-old granddaughter, Ansleigh!   On the day before Halloween, I picked Ansleigh and her 6-year-old brother, Trayden, up and brought them over for some quality "Bake Time" with their Mimi (uh, that would be me).  We mixed up packaged sugar cookie mix (so simple!), rolled it out and used cookie cutters in the shapes of pumpkins, ghosts and bats to cut the cookies.  Then, we sprinkled orange sugar crystals on them before baking.  VOILA!!!  Halloween cookies!!!

To be honest, Trayden lost interest in the project pretty quickly.  He cut out a couple of cookies and then headed out into the backyard to romp with the dogs and search for treasures in the dirt.  But, Ansleigh took to cookie-making like a duck to water....and stayed with me through the last sheet of cookies.

This was a morning I will always treasure!  Just look at those precious little helping hands.....

And so October has raced past us....remaining only in memories.  Did it fly by for you, too?  Did you accomplish your goals for the month?  Spend the time you wanted with your Family?  Oh, I hope you did!

I am linking with Heidi at "Heart and Home" for Wednesday Gratitude.  Please take a moment to go over and check it out!

Looking forward....

Halloween......Family Style!!!

Our first Halloween back in town....close to family, especially those grandkids!!!  Yep, we had to do something really special to celebrate.

So, we decided to invite everyone over on Saturday evening for some pumpkin carving and a big ol' pot of Ed's fabulous homemade chili.

In attendance, the Boys (Ben and Sam), Bonnie and her Brood (Trayden and Ansleigh), Dad, and Mom and Bob.  Oh, and of course, dear Eddie Dale and moi, the hosts with the most!

We started out on the back patio with pumpkin carving....

Ed sorta ran this part of the show, seeing as how he is the master pumpkin carver!  In exchange for his overseeing the outdoor activities, I shuttled in and out from the kitchen with drinks for everybody and kept the pot of chili stirred.  And, I was the official photographer of the evening's activities, by default!

Here he is getting everybody organized and started with the carving.....

Eddie Dale helping everyone find the perfect pattern.
Daddy was the first one to jump in and start cuttin'!

Bob looks on as the carvers get started.

This is the hard part, right???
Bonnie always manages to look like she's having fun....
This part is kinda yucky, Mimi!
Ben, deciding who he is going to end up helping....
And the lucky winner of Uncle Ben's help - Trayden!
Mom had a great time watching - but, no messy carving for her.
And Sam was totally distracted by his new I-phone....
But, one by one, they all finished up their masterpieces....and brought them over to me to be lit up and photographed.
Ansleigh and her happy little Jack-o-lantern
Bonnie and her ambitious UT/Longhorn carving
Trayden might be serious, but his jack-o-lantern is surprisingly happy!
Daddy picked a very traditional pattern, but he had the best "stemmage", hands down!
I think Eddie Dale got confused and thought this was a mug-shot....
But, I did say he was the master carver - and he proved it once again!
When they were all lit up, I finally got someone else to snap a photo of me with the grandkids....just so y'all  would believe I was actually there!  :)
Oh, my goodness....is that a "deer in the headlights" look on my face, or what?!?!?
At this point, everyone was getting pretty hungry and that chili, with its tantalizing aroma, was beckoning us into the kitchen.

Dinner was super simple and casual.  We ate spicy chili out of styrofoam bowls and slathered warm flour tortillas with butter.  Dessert was peach cobbler, munchkin-sized cupcakes, and the sugar cookies Ansleigh and I made earlier in the day.  (More on that in another post.....'cause it was just so special it deserves its own space!)

It was loud, chaotic and crowded!  The food was filling, hot and oh-so-yummy!  Everybody had a great time and the evening was total success!!!   And I am so glad we were able to do this with our Family.....this "building memories" is a "very good thing".

Here's one last look at all the Jack-o-lanterns before they went home with their carvers.....

Aren't they just so SPOOKY and BOO-TIFUL?!?!?!?  (Sorry, I couldn't resist that....I promise I won't do it again....ever!)

Be back later with more about those sugar cookies.....and then we'll shift gears and look ahead!  After all, it is November!

FALL PORCH PARTY (Make Mine Spooky, Please!)

It's Party Time!!!

Debra, over at "COMMON GROUND", is hosting a Fall Porch Party....

And since we are well into October now, I decided to go all out with the Halloween decorating before joining the party.

I started with a simple concept....six metal hooks, six plastic pumpkins, one string of orange lights, one string of purple lights, and seven yards of black netting.  And this is what I came up with around the header of the porch....

A good start.....but somehow just not quite "enough".

So, I crafted a "SPOOKY" garland to add another layer....

Okay.....now we were getting somewhere.

I dug around in my bins and crates of Halloween decorations and culled out my favorites.....like this Ghostly Greeter to welcome visitors onto the porch....

And this "Which Way Witch" and vintage-style garden flag to carry a bit of fun over to the side stoop....

Might as well throw in another witch for good measure, right???

A quick re-arrangement of potted mums and pumpkins
(which were already part of the Porch Decor)....

And so far, so good!

But, the real test was to wait until the sun sank lower and lower......

Almost dark.....

Finally......there is the look I was going for!!!

Not too creepy....not too spooky....just a whole lot of FUN!!!

And one final look.....BOO!!!

Now, me and my porch are headed over to "Common Ground" to hang out.  C'mon and join us....there will be lots of Fall porches to explore and Inspiration galore!!!  It's simple to follow, just click on this link....

See y 'all later!!!
